'Gift' by Antonia Mrljak's coming to Becker Minty this month
'Gift' traces the lineage of Antonia’s mark making process and how it has transformed the complexity of her art practice. In exploring this important aspect of her work she is also finding a deep connection to home, heritage and land while working in a contemporary environment, connecting the present to a past and greater consciousness.
As a result of this exploration into a deeper aspect of herself and her heritage, Antonia stumbled across a statement that reflected the foundation of the meaning of her practice in abstraction: ‘The thing is to stalk your calling in a certain skilled and supple way, to locate the most tender and live spot and plug into that spot.” (Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.) It is from this innermost part of herself that 'Gift' was created.
A Sydney based artist, Antonia has completed both a Diploma of Fine Arts and most recently, a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Sydney College Of The Arts, majoring in painting. Antonia’s art practice involves the appreciation of the modest and humble, the imperfect, the incomplete, and the transitory. A fascination with these notions and the contradiction of permanence and change, her paintings represent states that are timeless but always changing. A passionate abstractionist, the foundations of Antonia’s works stem from her early working years within fashion and styling.
Antonia’s particular approach to painting seems almost natural at times. She uses her vivid storage of memory and experience to conjure the images for the subject of her paintings. This comes from a past full of vibrancy and culture, but also turbulence and conflict. Her connection to memory is an embodied and figurative one, which is naturally processed through painting and drawings.
